I think the reason some people like the iPhone over Android devices is usability. It really is simple. One button. Simple home screen. Snappy and fluid. On the other hand, the reason why many (like me) like Android devices is because it offers unlimited customization. Unfortunately, there is no hybrid. Once you add one level of customization, you remove the simplicity.

I do, however, feel that Android could be a little more user friendly. I hope that ICS will offer a good mix between simplicity and user control.

Software looks slick, but I have the same concerns. Multitouch is a deal-breaker if you've ever used an iPhone or iPad. It's got to be at least as good or I won't even consider switching.

Another barrier to entry for someone like me is that I already have a lot invested in apps for my ios devices. I wouldn't want to start over. And if Apple continues to make me a happy customer, I won't have to.

You have a valid point Devin. But I think those same concerns are what will keep the market competitive and keep your data open. I would never continue to use a service that wouldn't allow me to access my data whenever I wanted. And perhaps there is not just one company but many that offer various services. If you own a website, you are probably already sorting important data on a hosted server. If you use email through gmail, you are already trusting a TON to Google.

I think it will be a natural evolution that normal computer using folks will do more and more computing in the cloud, and not even realize it. It's happening already.

I, for one, am a little hesitant for this shift. It's a monetary concern.

Let's say you sign up for a remote account from Acme Corp. You choose them because they have a low monthly access fee, and their servers seem to be very powerful. Then, a year later, they increase your access fee slightly. No biggie, right? You continue to backup your files locally, your data is safe. A year later they disable local backups. Kinda stinks, but it's okay. They have better redundant storage volumes anyway. It's safer with them.

Then they hike the price.

I'm not willing to subscribe to that model.

Don't get me wrong, I think that cloud computing will eventually become pretty standard, but I don't think we'd ever give up local computing for remote computing. Most people aren't willing to transfer ownership like that. I think it will be a nice mix. If you want to subscribe to a cloud computer that does real-time rendering for your 3D animation, you can. If you want to subscribe to a photo backup cloud, please do. But we can never let one company take complete control of all our computing habits. That would be dictatorship.

I don't notify although I've thought of doing that. Majority of my traffic seems to be firefox, with IE in second place. If there is something to do with with functionality that is broken on IE, I might fix it... otherwise I don't bother. If my site looks different or weird in IE, I think of it as punishment for the user using a non-modern browser. Probably not the best, but it works for me.

Yeah, I've thought along those same lines before. At the moment, however, I don't really have a choice, since my employer has asked me to develop for all browsers. If I could, I would develop for "modern browsers"—I don't consider IE to be "modern". I mean, in the new IE 9 I tested the :hover pseudo selector and it didn't work!

So just out of curiosity, do you notify IE users that your page is ment to be viewed in another browser? How many visiters do you have that use IE?

I know it still has a lot of users, but I just don't bother developing for IE anymore. I figure if they can't be bothered to write a good browser, I can't be bothered to write websites for it. If enough coders stopped making their sites work in IE, I think a bigger chunk of the user base would eventually "get it" and move on to Firefox.

You can also style on a custom attribute. So, if you have an element like this:
...
You can style this li like this:
li[tab="account"] { border: 1px solid pink; }

If you have multiple elements with the same custom attribute, only with different values, you can style them all like this:
li[tab] {border 1px solid red; }

I use custom attributes all the time for my javascript, because I know nobody will mess with them. This helps us keep the html required for the javascript separate from the html needed for the styling. But you can use them for both.

I completely agree! All this talk of 7" ipads seems like the exact opposite of what apple should be doing. Since the first week of using mine I've thought that the screen real-estate should be closer to the traditional 8.5 x 11 size that all humanity is used to. I realize that there is an exponential cost in size of screens, but I would hope that future versions get closer to this size and lighter in weight. BTW, my ipad is used strictly around the house, sofa, bed, for all but photoshop computing needs. All the rest of my computing is done at work on a work computer, so I'm probably not the target audience for the ipad. Not to mention that I think that another data plan for the 3g ipads is sheer piracy/stupidity on the part of the evil empire. But I digress.
Thanks, B

Janka,

Yes, you can get that information, but you'll need to do a query to get it. Something like the following:

<pre><code>Query query = pm.newQuery(FavoriteFood.class);
query.setFilter("favoriteFood == favoriteFoodParam");
query.declareParameters("long favoriteFoodIDParam")
try {
     List foods = query.execute(favoriteFoodID);//favoriteFoodID needs to be a long and be declared earlier
     if(!foods.isEmpty()) {
          Food theFood = usersWithUserId.iterator().next();//this assumes that you are searching for one
     }
} finally {
     pm.close();
}
return theFood.getId();</code></pre>

Every great programmer has had to fix his own bugs. Hopefully, as you gain more experience, you'll be able to anticipate more and more bugs, modify your programming practices, and code a bug-free application. Until then, happy de-bugging!

There's a few metrics that sell App Phones. Megapixels. Megabytes. Removable Storage. Google Integration. Facebook Integration. Number of Apps. If I want to throw an app together quickly to, say, remind me of people's birthdays, I can probably do that with App Inventor. That's one more app for the marketplace, and one step closer to taking over the world.
